About the trip

Time to bust out some packrafts!

The Alum Cliffs is a really spectacular bit of gorge in the north of the state. Over summer at lower flows it's a good packrafting mission with some class 2/3 whitewater although the water levels are too scratchy for big rafts.

This is a bit more of an involved trip so preference given to people with some packrafting/multi day experience but depending on who comes along might be able to take some people without it (just need to make sure we have the right ratio of experience on the trip).

Plan of action -

Saturday 22/03

Meet at sheds at 10:30 am, pack gear and drive to the pull out point, stopping in to Deloraine on the way for lunch. We'll drop a car at the pull out point on the way (Kellys Cage Rd Bridge) before continuing on to the start point which is Union Bridge. Goal is to be on river by 3pm at the latest to paddle the 6km section of flatwater to a camp site just before the gorge

Sunday 23/03

Paddle the main section of the gorge, camp site will depend on progress, may camp in the gorge or if we make good time could even get off river in time to head for home (possible but unlikely with low water levels).

Monday 24/03

Finish paddling, do the shuttle and drive home! If we have spare time up our sleeves could check out a cave near Deloraine.

Key info -

Everyone needs to pack all the usual on river gear as well as multi day camping stuff. Pack light as we'll be lugging it over rocks etc. Make sure everything has been waterproofed/is in dry bags/garbage bags. Make sure you have enough food for the two nights and three days. Don't stress the camping stuff too much, we can share stoves and I can find some tarps etc. As long as everyone has sleeping bag/sleeping mat and three days of food we should be able to fix the rest but if you are going to need any gear please let me know prior!

Depending on how many takers we have, experience levels and packraft availability I may need to limit numbers for the trip. I will contact everyone who is on board prior to Saturday to confirm who is going etc.
