Cataract Gorge (South Esk River)

Rafting through some rapids on the South Esk RiverGrade: 4–5+
Distance: 5km
Time: 2–6 hours
Get in: Trevallyn Dam or Duck Reach (2km run)
Get out: Tamar River
Water level: 35–45cm above spillway (1400–1900 cusecs). Can occur either through flooding or Hydro release. Both are rare.

The Cataract gorge is highly technical paddling with the potential for very big water at high flows. Any trips to this river would need to be made up of the highly experienced who are prepared for scary whitewater. On the plus side the trip is close to civilisation and walk outs would be very doable.
